“There is no silver bullet answer for our energy and environmental goals. We must keep all options open to make sure we have the necessary generation and infrastructure.”

“New York’s key industries — financial and professional services, media, information technology, health and real estate — all depend on the reliable availability of huge amounts of power.  Unfortunately, our highly competitive power system is in jeopardy today because of political deadlock over the state process for approving new power generation facilities. Without a realistic state energy strategy in place, there may not be enough power to run our economy in the future.  Industry, government and environmental interests must come together to support a siting law that insures New York's ability to power continued economic growth. And it is time to cease the calls for closing the Indian Point nuclear power plant that the city depends on because there is no way to replace it as an energy source.”

“New York is home to some of the highest electricity rates in the nation. Stagnant electricity supply levels, combined with ever increasing demand for this scarce commodity have resulted in rates that are 60% above the national average. Working with groups like New York AREA, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York is committed to siting and building necessary power generation to meet New York City’s goals for growth while maintaining all current forms of electricity generation that our region depends on.”

"We must get more supply into the grid, but if we are going to fast-track any kind of energy production, it must also help us confront the challenge of global warming."

“We’re …committed to protecting existing clean energy sources, including the nuclear plant that helps power parts of our city and suburbs. This is a good example of people not facing reality.”

“There are a lot of people who want to shut down the nuclear plant, but they have never offered any realistic alternatives – even as they at the same time want to fight global warming.”

Our region doesn’t meet federal regulations for clean air and hasn’t in many years. That translates into higher than normal asthma rates and compromised immune systems, especially for children and the elderly.

There are plenty of reasons for the lack of compliance, including power plants three states away that are pushing soot into their smokestacks and ultimately into our lungs.
